Top 7 Spring Style Trends You Want to Jump on Now (and 1 You Don’t)

By Holly Riddle

With the East Coast getting constantly hammered with snow and ice, it seems like spring will never get here. The perfect remedy? Put the thought of chilly weather aside, crank up the thermostat, make yourself a margarita and indulge in a little online shopping. These are the 7 spring style trends that you’ll want in your closet asap.

#1 - Sparkle

You really can never have enough glitter, whether you’re shopping at your fav budget mall shop or perusing the latest styles from Gucci and Dior. The key to making sure you look couture, not uncultured, is to pair your sparkles with a more understated piece — like boots or a casual jacket.

#2 - Fringe, Baby

This blast from the past takes careful execution or else you end up looking like one of several things — a culturally misappropriated white-girl- dressed-as- Pocahontas at Coachella; Teddy Roosevelt circa 1885 (trust us and go look it up, and this was while his baller mustache was still in its baby-faced infancy); or a mop dog (you know the type of dog we’re talking about).

#3 - Utility Jumpsuits

Perhaps you can break out your mechanic grandad’s old jumpsuit from the ‘50s and give it an upgrade, because this is super similar, only fitted and tailored and totally adorable. We know what you’re thinking— how is this any different than the rompers that were so popular a few years ago? So they’re somewhat similar, yes, as in, you still are going to have a freaking hard time any time you want to go to the bathroom, but this version kicks it up a notch with some perfectly comfortable fits that make you look effortlessly put together.

#4 - Hues of Blue

Okay, so we all know that pastels come around during Easter and spring season, but are there particular colors you should pay special attention to? Like the next “big” color (is millennial pink still a thing?)? According to the runways, this season it’s very pale “icy” blue, and violet (which is kind of a shade of blue, technically, right?), and the two are popping up all over the place, not just the runways. So make like an Easter egg and add some pastels to your wardrobe.

#5 - Sneakers

Your feet can thank you, and now all the gals who prefer sneakers to stilettos can breathe a sigh of relief. Sneakers are back in style, or at least, the high fashion sneakers are. Guaranteed you’ll get very different looks if you walk out in a pair of Louis Vuitton trainers as compared to walking out with some New Balance kicks.

#6 - Bum Bags

Were you aware that fanny packs are not fanny packs in Europe? No, no. Instead, they have an equally ridiculous name, just in case you were hoping that the refined English upgraded the word “fanny pack” (because they didn’t). Say hello to the bum bag! Now, you’ll never say “fanny pack” again. Whether you’re a Kardashian or…well, if you’re a Kardashian…you can pull off your Gucci bum bag with ease. If you’re one of us normal folk, you still may have to wait a bit before it hits mainstream, but at least you’ll be ahead of the curve?

#7 - Oversized Jewelry

Remember those huge hoops from the early 2000s that you have stashed in the back of your vanity? It’s time to dig them out again and just ignore anyone who dare says “bigger the hoop, bigger the ho.” If oversize jewelry is in this spring, let the haters hate.

#8 - Plastic

Last but not least, the most atrocious of all (not that everything on this list is atrocious — looking at you, Teddy Roosevelt). Plastic. Chanel had a plastic runway show this season, so it must be true, but…plastic? Yes, we’re all delusional from the cold now, but what about in summer when it’s 90 degrees and your plastic boots are filled with foot sweat and your plastic trench coat is sticking to your thighs? Can someone go back to the drawing board on this one?
